Price guide
How much does a fence repair cost in Oxfordshire?
Short answer
Fence repairs cost £80 to £180 on one Carterton handyman’s price list. For labour, a national installer charges £96 to fit one panel, falling to £45 a panel for seven or more. Its 6-foot lap panels cost £47 and concrete posts £24. Posts, concrete and waste add to the bill, so get two written quotes.
What an Oxfordshire handyman charges
Few Oxfordshire firms publish a fitted fence price. Most quote after they see the fence and the posts.

Labour and materials from a national installer
One national installer publishes labour per panel and its material prices. Labour per panel falls as the number of panels rises. These are national prices, not Oxfordshire quotes.

What adds to the price
A broken post costs more than a broken panel. The old concrete must come out before a new post goes in.
- New posts, concrete and gravel boards.
- Removing the old panel, post and concrete.
- No side access, so materials go through the house.
- Heavier fence types, such as closeboard.
- Hard ground, slopes or tree roots.
Rules to check first
A like-for-like panel rarely needs planning permission. The usual English limits are 2 metres, or 1 metre next to a road for vehicles. Listed buildings and Article 4 areas are exceptions.
If your garden runs down to the Thames or another main river, work within 8 metres of the bank can need an Environment Agency permit. Ask the Environment Agency first.
Questions
How much does it cost to replace one fence panel?
A national installer charges £96 labour for one panel, plus £47 for a 6-foot lap panel. Labour per panel falls when you replace several. A Carterton handyman publishes repairs at £80 to £180.
Is it cheaper to replace several panels at once?
Per panel, yes. The national installer charges £60 a panel for two to four panels and £45 for seven or more, against £96 for one.
Who pays to fix a fence between two gardens?
The owner of the fence pays. The title plan or the seller’s property information may show who owns it. If it is unclear, talk to your neighbour before work starts.
