A handyman takes on the small repairs that bigger trades often turn down, such as a door that sticks, a loose lock or a cracked seal. Most charge by the hour or with a minimum charge, so group the jobs into one visit. Gas and some electrical jobs need a registered trade. Local firms are listed below.

Typical jobs for one visit
An odd job lasts from a few minutes to a few hours. Write a list, add photos, and send it before the visit.
- Doors that catch, drop or will not latch.
- Loose hinges, handles, locks and window catches.
- Curtain poles, blinds, mirrors and pictures.
- Draught strips and letter-box brushes.
- Silicone round baths, showers and sinks.
- A new toilet seat or a dripping tap washer.
Snags in a new-build home
New estates in towns such as Bicester, Didcot and Wantage have many recently built homes. If your home has an NHBC Buildmark policy, check it first.
NHBC says the builder must put right defects reported in the first two years. Report a defect to the builder before you pay a handyman. Normal wear, neglect and lack of maintenance are not covered.
Jobs for a registered trade
Gas work needs a Gas Safe registered engineer. HSE says anyone paid to work on a gas appliance in a home must be on the register.
A new electrical circuit, a new consumer unit, or work near a bath or shower is notifiable. A registered electrician can certify it. A like-for-like change to a light fitting on an existing circuit is not notifiable.
How firms charge
Most Oxfordshire handymen charge by the hour, with a first-hour or minimum charge. One Carterton firm publishes £70 to £120 for a door repair.

Questions
Can a handyman replace a ceiling light?
Usually, if it replaces an existing light on the same circuit and is not in a bathroom zone. That is not notifiable, but it must be safe. A new circuit needs a registered electrician or building control.
Should the builder fix snags in my new house?
If your home has NHBC Buildmark cover, the builder must put right defects you report in the first two years. Report them to the builder first.
How do I make a minimum charge go further?
Save several small jobs for one visit. Send a list and photos first, so the handyman brings the right parts and does not need a second trip.
