Gutter and downpipe clearing in Oxfordshire
Short answer
Clear gutters and downpipes every year, once the autumn leaves are down. An overflowing gutter soaks the wall and can lead to damp. Many firms clear gutters from the ground with a pole-mounted vacuum. A Bicester-area firm publishes £80 to £140 for a 3-bedroom semi. This page lists Oxfordshire firms.

Why a clear gutter matters
A blocked gutter overflows onto the wall below. Over time, the wet wall can let damp into the house and rot timber.
Leaves from street trees and gardens fill gutters quickly in autumn. Homes under big trees may need a clear in spring as well.
What a clear covers
A full clear removes leaves, moss and silt from each gutter and flushes each downpipe. Ask the firm to report leaking joints and loose brackets.
Ask the firm for photos of each gutter, taken before and after. Most gutters are out of sight from the ground.
Gutters, gullies and drains
Thames Water says you are responsible for gutters, gullies and drains inside your boundary that serve only your home. Where a drain is shared with a neighbour, Thames Water owns the shared part.
If water backs up from a shared drain, contact Thames Water before you pay for a drain clear.
Ladder safety
HSE says a ladder suits only short, low-risk jobs. HSE gives these rules for a leaning ladder.
- Set the foot 1 unit out for every 4 units of height, an angle of about 75°.
- Keep three points of contact while you climb.
- Do not lean out. Keep your body inside the stiles.
- Check the ladder before each use.
Take care with doorstep offers
Oxfordshire Trading Standards warns about uninvited callers who offer gutter and roof work and say it is urgent. Do not agree work at the door.
Choose a firm yourself, and get a written price first. Our guide to checking a handyman explains how.
Questions
How often should gutters be cleared in Oxfordshire?
Most homes need one clear a year, in late autumn. A house under large trees can need another in spring, and a look after a storm.
Do I need permission to replace gutters?
The Building Regulations do not apply. GOV.UK lists gutters and downpipes as exempt work. For a listed building, ask the council before you change the material.
A man at my door says my gutters need urgent work. What do I do?
Do not agree on the spot. Oxfordshire Trading Standards warns about callers who claim urgent gutter or roof work. Ask for ID, close the door, and find a firm yourself.
