What does a handyman cost per hour in Oxfordshire?

Short answer

Oxfordshire handymen publish rates from £25 an hour in Kidlington to £35 an hour, with a £45 first hour, from a firm serving Witney and Oxford. A Carterton firm sets a £70 minimum charge that includes travel. A national cost guide gives a typical UK rate of about £30 an hour. Ask what the minimum charge covers before you book.

Extra charges to ask about

The hourly rate is not the whole bill. Ask about each of these before the visit.

  • A higher first hour, or a minimum charge.
  • Travel, especially to villages away from the firm’s base.
  • Parts and materials.
  • Evening, weekend and emergency work.
  • Card or bank transfer fees. DiY Dave, for example, publishes a £20 fee per invoice for these.
  • VAT, if the firm is VAT registered.

Make one visit do more

A minimum charge covers travel and set-up. Put several small jobs on one list, so the charge buys more work.

Send photos and sizes in advance, so the handyman brings the right parts.

Get the price in writing

Agree the rate, the minimum charge and the extras by text or email. Without an agreed price, section 51 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 says you owe a reasonable price.

Questions

Do Oxfordshire handymen charge a call-out fee?

Some do. The Cotswold Handy Company publishes no call-out charge but a £45 first hour. DiY Dave adds travel from £10 a visit. oxfordshire handyman in Carterton has a £70 minimum charge that includes travel.

Is a handyman cheaper by the day?

Often, per hour. We found no Oxfordshire firm that publishes a day rate. Ask for one if your list will take more than half a day.

Is a handyman cheaper than a specialist trade?

Often, for small jobs. But a handyman cannot do gas work, and some electrical work needs a registered electrician. For those jobs, you need the specialist.
