Short answer
Banbury is a town of two halves for a handyman. Near the centre, a third of homes are flats and many are rented. On the edges, large estates from the 1950s to the 1990s need ordinary upkeep. The town centre is a conservation area, so check before you change a historic front.

Where are the flats and rented homes in Banbury?
Mostly in the centre and to the east. In the 2021 Census, 32.9 per cent of households in Banbury Cross and Neithrop ward lived in a purpose-built flat.
The same ward had 37.8 per cent of households in private rented homes. In Banbury Grimsbury and Hightown, east of the station, the figure was 36.4 per cent.
Across the 5 town wards, 24.0 per cent of the 22,434 households rented privately. In a flat, check your lease for who repairs shared doors and windows.
How old are the estates around Banbury?
Many date from after the war. In the Banbury Ruscote area, 72.1 per cent of homes on the Council Tax list were built between 1945 and 1972.
Banbury Hardwick is newer. There, 51.3 per cent of homes date from 1973 to 1999, and 37.2 per cent from 2000 or later.
HSE says buildings from before 2000 may contain asbestos. Ask a handyman how they will check before they cut into an old ceiling or panel.
Which parts of Banbury are conservation areas?
The town centre is one, and Grimsbury is another. Cherwell District Council records Banbury from October 2004 and Banbury Grimsbury from January 2007.
The Oxford Canal, which runs through the town, also has its own conservation area.
Outside these areas, a new fence beside a road can be up to 1 metre high without planning permission. Elsewhere, the limit is 2 metres.
What should landlords in Banbury know?
Rented homes need regular checks. GOV.UK says landlords must have the electrics inspected at least every 5 years by a qualified person.
Since 1 October 2022, private landlords must fit a carbon monoxide alarm in any room with a fixed fuel-burning appliance, except a gas cooker.
A handyman can fit a battery alarm or fix a sticking fire door. Gas work needs a Gas Safe registered engineer, by law.
Landlords should keep a record of each repair and check, with the date.
