What happened in the Witney floods of December 2020?
Heavy rain on 23 December overloaded road drains. The river then peaked just after midnight on 25 December.
At least 54 homes and businesses flooded inside, a council investigation found. Some residents had to leave their homes.
The report suggests self-sealing air bricks, barriers and better drains at the rear of homes. A handyman can fit some of these. Check your address on the GOV.UK flood risk service first.
Where are the newest Witney homes?
In the west. In the Witney West area, 33.5 per cent of homes on the Council Tax list were built in 2015 or later.
Witney East is different. There, 36.4 per cent of homes date from 1973 to 1999, and only 1.8 per cent from 2015 on.
On a new estate, a planning condition may remove some permitted development rights. Check before a big garden project.
Who rents in Witney?
Social renting is highest in the centre. In Witney Central ward, 29.0 per cent of households rented from a council or housing association.
Across the 5 wards, 17.5 per cent rented privately and 369 households had shared ownership.
Witney North is mostly owners. There, 45.1 per cent of households owned outright in 2021.
What are the limits on a Witney handyman?
Gas work needs a Gas Safe registered engineer. That rule covers boilers, fires, hobs and pipework.
A new fuse box or circuit needs a registered electrician or building control approval.
After the 2020 floods, this matters more. Wiring that has been under water needs an electrician to test it before use.
Where are the flats in Witney?
Mostly in the centre and the south. In Witney Central ward, 21.0 per cent of households lived in a purpose-built flat in 2021. In Witney South, the figure was 16.7 per cent.
Witney North has very few. There, only 2.8 per cent of households lived in one.
If you live in a flat, the lease usually says who repairs the windows, the roof and the shared doors. Read it before you book a firm.
Questions
How tall can my front fence be in Witney?
Up to 1 metre beside a road used by vehicles, without planning permission. Away from the road, the limit is 2 metres.
Is central Witney a conservation area?
Yes. West Oxfordshire District Council lists Witney and Cogges as a conservation area. Ask the council before you change an old front.
Can a handyman help after a flood?
Yes, with clearing and repairs. Ask a registered electrician to check wet wiring before you switch it back on.
